The Child Development playschool program is marking its 50th year at Pattonville High School and teachers in the family and consumer sciences department are running it like never before.
“This year, obviously, we are unable to conduct the on-site playschool learning lab,” Ms. Susan Saputo said. “Ms. Tracie Olson and I didn't want the program to have a year-long interruption, so we have had what we call ‘Playschool@Home.’”
This fall, they enlisted the participation of 13 children between the ages of 3 to 5 years old and their parents to be enrolled in their first-ever virtual playschool class. All of the preschoolers were given activities made by students in Child Development 1 to do at home at their own pace and met with the high schoolers in Child Development 2 for virtual learning.
Students in Ms. Amy Schwendemann’s Applied Science and Technology class began the spring semester with a little spring cleaning.
The hydroponic wall towers in the cafeteria were shut down in March when schools were closed due to COVID-19.
“This is the first time since turning them off in March that we had a chance to work on cleaning them,” Schwendemann said.
Pattonville High School junior Haley Edmonds and her friends wanted to make the holiday season a little better for families struggling financially. She approached the district with an idea and launched Pattonville Gives.
“Instead of buying gifts for each other, we wanted to be able to donate gifts to kids in need,” Edmonds said. “I thought that if I started something in the school district, it would help more people locally and that I would actually be able to help.”
The Pattonville Fire Protection District delivered two red sleighs full of toys to be given to Pattonville students in need. The red sleighs (technically an antique fire truck and an ambulance) pulled up to the Pattonville Early Childhood Center and the nine elves (technically firefighters) quickly unloaded the vehicles.
The fire district has been collecting toys for Pattonville students for nine years through its "Breakfast with Santa" event at one of its fire stations. Due to COVID-19, they had to cancel that event and found other ways to solicit donations, and the community rose to the occasion.
Two Pattonville seniors signed letters of intent to play college-level athletics next year. Madison Bailey signed to further her softball and academic careers at Kaskaskia College, and Kaeli Benedict signed to play women’s soccer and pursue her degree at Missouri State University.
